Devlog #3 — The Madam’s Shop

Last devlog we ran a whole shift with you — roster, doorbell, hand, serve, temptation, cash out. This one’s about what Emma does the moment it ends: she counts her money, and she goes to see the Madam.

The walk to the Madam’s

You cleared the whole roster, the risk held, and you’re walking out with a stack of money — earned a hand at a time, the better the play the bigger the cut. That money is the entire reason Emma started this. It’s supposed to go to the mortgage.

Most of it won’t. Because there’s a door she always ends up at first.

Who the Madam is

The Madam runs the shop, and that’s all she does for Emma. She stocks the shelves, and somehow she always knows what Emma needs before Emma does.

What she gets up to the rest of the time is her own business. Whatever the Madam’s own hustle is, she isn’t telling — and Emma’s learned not to ask.

She doesn’t ask how the shift went. She just slides the counters open.

What’s on the shelves

The shop is how you gear up for next time. Picture the counter:

Two things headline it:

  • 🃏 Cards — you add them straight to your deck. It’s a short deck, so a couple of cards swing it hard: buy Rough cards and Rough hands start landing when you need them. This is how you tilt the deck toward whatever your regulars crave.
  • 🃎 Jokers — passive rule-benders that ride with you the whole run. One might pay double on every full house; another might cool Emma’s temptation whenever she keeps things vanilla. The mean ones change how you play entirely.

…with 👗 outfits (what she’s wearing when she answers the door) and 🍑 toys (new things she’s suddenly willing to do) on the way.

Every purchase digs her in a little deeper

Here’s the part that matters. You’re not just getting stronger at the shop — you’re getting deeper.

Remember the handyman from last time: loves it Rough, and you barely had the cards for him. So the first thing you buy is more Rough — and now Rough is what your deck wants to do. Pick up the full-house joker and you’ll spend the next shift chasing hands you’d never have reached for. Bit by bit the shop stops being a thing Emma uses and starts being a thing that shapes her.

That’s the loop the whole game runs on — shift → shop → shift — and every visit leaves a mark. The money was meant for the bills, and she’s standing at the Madam’s counter instead.

Next?

Honest answer: we’re not sure what we’ll show you next — because we’re getting close to the part we care about most. The table plays. The shop’s taking shape. The pieces are starting to click into something you could actually get your hands on.

So we’re not promising a thing, or a date. Maybe a little taste you can play. Maybe just more peeks while we get it right. Either way it’s close — close enough that we’d rather not jinx it.

Keep an eye out. 👀
